Access Cumberland Court Dockets

Start with the paperwork, not the town name. A Cumberland court docket search only works once you know which county and which court sit on the citation, notice, or cause number, because Cumberland straddles Hancock and Marion counties and no active Hancock-side Cumberland town court exists in current state listings. The Indiana official system handles the Cumberland court docket search itself, while the maintaining county's clerk issues certified copies. For hearing dates, call the named court directly; town and county event calendars will not carry them.

Searching the Cumberland Court Docket

Venue comes first. Cumberland sits in two counties. A search limited to Hancock can miss a Marion filing entirely. If the document names Hancock, open Indiana MyCase and pick Hancock County. The active codes are Circuit 30C01, Superior 1 30D01, and Superior 2 30D02.

A cause number is the sharpest search key. MyCase also takes a single citation or cross-reference number, plus party and attorney fields. Filter party hits by county, category, status, and file date. Very large result sets get capped, and excluded records stay out of the portal.

  1. Find the county, court, and number on the Cumberland citation or notice.
  2. Select the printed county rather than searching by the town name alone.
  3. Enter one cause, citation, cross-reference, party, or attorney key.
  4. Match court code, case type, file date, style, and status.
  5. Confirm a date or official balance with the maintaining court or clerk.

Cumberland Crosses Two Court Counties

Cumberland sits on the Historic National Road just east of Indianapolis, with roughly half the town in Hancock County and half in Marion County. That split turns venue into a real docket-search problem. A street address or a police reference number proves very little about which county court actually holds the filed case.

Two-county rule: Let the citation’s county and named court control. Search Hancock only when the document identifies a Hancock venue.

Hancock venue means the three active county courts and the unified Hancock Clerk. Marion venue means that court and its own clerk instead. Never force every Cumberland result into Hancock just because the town shows up on Hancock's municipal list.

Cumberland Municipal Court Basics

No active Hancock Cumberland Municipal or Town Court appears in the current Odyssey, Rule 8, or judicial-service listings. The official Odyssey court list names only Hancock's Circuit and Superior courts. A town office is not a hidden court. A municipal document center is not a judicial docket.

For a Hancock-side Cumberland matter, local allocation generally sends an ordinance violation, infraction, misdemeanor, Level 6 felony, or small claim to Superior Court 2. The filed cause number controls in the end, though. Under Hancock rules, other case classes can land in Circuit or Superior 1.

Cumberland Citation County Comes First

A citation carries several routing fields: issuing agency, offense location, county, court, UTT or cause number, appearance or payment date, and charge description. Keep the original handy. The county field matters more than the word Cumberland, since it separates the two possible court systems.

A county line can slice straight through a town without creating a town court. Venue always follows the court where the case was filed.

Court Dates and Settings in Cumberland

Once the right case opens, read its CCS event text. A setting may list date, time, room, judge, and event type. A file date only marks when the case opened or an item was entered. It is not automatically the appearance date. A later continuance can replace an earlier setting. The older event stays on the record.

DateThe current hearing date stated in the setting or court notice.
TimeThe start time or docket-call time.
CourtroomThe room and county courthouse location stated by the court.
JudgeThe assigned judge or magistrate when published.
Setting TypeInitial hearing, pretrial, trial, compliance, or another case event.

For Hancock dates, call Circuit at 317-477-1107, Superior 1 at 317-477-1148, Superior 2 at 317-477-1115, or the Clerk at 317-477-1109. A Marion venue needs the named Marion court's contact instead.

Cumberland Town Calendar Is Not Court

Cumberland's municipal meetings, agendas, and department notices concern town government, not court settings. Hancock County's general calendar is not a searchable daily judicial docket either, even when a category mentions the Clerk. The court itself controls judicial dates. The official Town of Cumberland site shows the municipal side of that line.

Cumberland town website for municipal information distinct from court docket records

That official town page helps you spot the right municipal source. A Cumberland hearing still must be verified in the case summary, a written notice, or with the named court itself.

Municipal pages also post police contacts, ordinances, forms, and council records. Those can explain the agency behind an issue. They cannot show whether a prosecutor filed a case or a judge entered an order. In Cumberland, the two-county boundary makes that distinction vital. Confirm both record type and county before calling any office.

Note: a town meeting date never resets a court hearing. A town contact cannot promise a judicial continuance.

Traffic Tickets in Cumberland

Indiana ePay can find eligible citations by UTT, driver-license number, or name and birth date. Verify any result against the citation's county and court. Not every ticket shows up right away, and some matters cannot be paid online. A missing Cumberland ticket may be new, ineligible, mistyped, or filed across the county line.

Recheck the UTT, give a recent ticket time for agency-to-court entry, and search MyCase. Then call the court or clerk named on the ticket. An online balance can lag later payments, interest, or fees. Get the official current amount before acting. Hancock-specific options sit on Hancock traffic tickets.

Cumberland Police Versus Court Records

Cumberland police and town departments manage municipal services and their own agency records. A court CCS belongs to the maintaining court and clerk. A police report may describe an incident. A court record, though, shows the judicial filing, settings, orders, and disposition. Treat neither as a stand-in for the other.

Venue
The county and court where the case is filed and heard.
UTT
The Uniform Traffic Ticket number used to track a citation.
CCS
Indiana’s Chronological Case Summary, the dated court-event list.
OV
A local ordinance violation; Hancock assigns its OV cases to Superior Court 2.

When the online entry is missing, the issuing agency can say where a ticket was sent. Only the court or clerk can confirm the filed docket and official case status.

Where Cumberland Cases Go

There is no single county that grabs every Cumberland case. The filing itself tells you where it landed. In Hancock, an infraction, ordinance violation, misdemeanor, Level 6 felony, or small claim usually sits in Superior Court 2. Circuit and Superior 1 divide the higher felonies along with many civil matters. Anything filed as a Marion case stays within the Marion court system that took it.

Docket flow: Cumberland incident › citation’s named county › named Circuit or Superior court

An Indiana cause number announces its venue up front. The first group carries county code 30 plus a court identifier. So a Hancock filing announces itself immediately. The groups that follow give the filing year and month. They also give the case type and the sequence number. When Hancock is the right county, the Hancock case lookup walks through the full number-search method.

Cumberland’s Historic Road Venue Clue

Cumberland was platted in 1831 along the Historic National Road. That geography is exactly why the town now straddles the Hancock and Marion line. History, though, decides nothing about modern venue. Odyssey records belong to whichever court actually accepted the filing. They do not belong to a founding map or a mailing address that simply says Cumberland. Town Hall sits at 11501 East Washington Street, Cumberland, Indiana 46229. The town lists 317-894-6213. Call it for municipal questions. It is not the Hancock County Clerk, and it cannot certify a Hancock CCS. A filed Hancock record comes from the unified clerk in Greenfield. The official 2020 population was 5,954. That size explains a dedicated search page for the town, not a separate court. No active Hancock Cumberland court identifier exists. Population rank has never created a bench by itself.

Cumberland Court Record Access Rules

Indiana presumes its court records are open. A rule, statute, or order can carve them out. Walking up to a clerk's counter can surface more than the document links on MyCase do. Expect juvenile, sealed, protected, mental-health, and certain expungement material to be hidden or unavailable. MyCase also keeps protection-order identities out of ordinary view.

Key Rules:

Access Rule 4 states Indiana’s general access principle.

Access Rule 5 identifies excluded records.

Access Rule 9 provides a petition process where access can lawfully be considered.

Hancock sets the clerk's copy fees plainly. For a Hancock Cumberland case, copies run $1 per page, microfilm runs $1 per page, and certification adds $3. A Marion case follows that county's own current rules and fees instead.

Missing Cumberland Docket Results

Test venue before anything else. A blank Hancock result does not mean you should just widen the name search. Go back and check the county and court fields. Confirm the number, drop any restrictive status or date filters, and try a citation or cross-reference search. Hyphens and leading zeroes in a cause number are sometimes optional. There are innocent explanations too. A brand-new ticket may not have been converted yet. Older electronic dockets carry gaps. Confidential, sealed, granted expungement, juvenile, and protected cases can be missing entirely. Parties requesting confidential files may have to prove identity. Ask the maintaining clerk which access category applies, without asking for protected identities. Remember what MyCase is. It offers public information, not the official certified record. Get copies and current financial data from the right county clerk. For a current court date or setting, call the named court. Town Hall still handles municipal documents and agency routing, nothing more.
